“Our Triune God"
Dear Friend,
I like big ideas that stretch my little mind. I disdain the clichés, assumptions and hack-kneed comments that shrivel the soul. Perhaps the biggest idea I have ever attempted to understand is a core concept of Christianity: that God is a Trinity.
The Trinity originates in two words: “tri” and “unity.” The Trinity is a Tri-unity. What does that mean?
- Tri – The church has historically understood the Scriptures to teach that God reveals Himself as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
- Unity –The church also insists that the Bible teaches “The Lord our God, He is One.”
- Trinity – God is one divine essence who reveals Himself through the Father, working as the Father; the Son working as the Son; and the Spirit working as the Spirit.
This concept must not be reduced to trivial comparisons. God is unique, and comparing Him to anything clouds our proper understanding of who He is.
The Trinity is the best way the Bible teaches us to think about the Lord God Almighty: infinite, awesome, majestic and the only God. I pray for God to bless you as you grow in your understanding, love and service of our Triune God.
