“Grow to Your Full Potential in Understanding”

Dear Friend,

The English word “understanding” is so common that we often overlook the two words that compose it: “under” and “stand.” Understanding is the concepts, values and insights that stand under our daily approach to life. Understanding occurs when we make knowledge personal so that we can apply it to our life challenges. Understanding produces three enriching benefits:

  • Better choices: It transforms abstract ideas into practical and effective choices and activities.

New values: It establishes new values and desires that inspire us, and it replaces duties that only compel us.

Powerful connections: It makes powerful connections between our best ideas and values, and the qualities of character and behavior necessary to achieve our life goals.

Teachers and mentors often help us improve and expand our knowledge. However, understanding requires thoughtfulness, meditation, self-awareness and the courage to challenge our assumptions. We must teach ourselves understanding. As Christians, we believe the Holy Spirit is the Person of the Trinity who prompts and guides us toward more mature states of understanding.

I encourage you to ask for divine help and to commit yourself to the discipline of growing to your full potential in understanding.
