“Generosity is a Form of Godliness”

Dear Friend,

In what circumstances are you open to someone challenging your generosity? I find the general response to this topic unenthusiastic at best, and hostile at worst. Is it fair for each of us to ask ourselves how open we are to thinking about our own attitudes on generosity? The Scriptures reiterate from Genesis to Revelation the generous nature of God. If I aspire to be godly, that means I am attempting to have qualities of soul and behavior that are like God. Generosity is a form of godliness.

I challenge myself with three questions that help me confront my truest thoughts about generosity:

  • When am I most inspired to be generous?
  • When am I most inclined to be self-indulgent instead of generous?
  • What is my sense of God’s expectation in each life situation that calls for my generosity?

The Scriptures also thematically connect true generosity with a deep sense of personal joy. The payoff of generosity seems to be a sense of well-being or awareness that we are living life well. God bless you as you grow into the excellence of a lifestyle of generosity.
