“Thanksgiving”
IThanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. My family gets together, I eat ridiculous amounts of food, we play games, and argue about politics and religion. For an obnoxious man like myself, it does not get any better.
I also celebrate a more silent and private Thanksgiving in the quiet morning hours before Thanksgiving and in the still darkness of evening after Thanksgiving; I review the goodness of God in my life and give thanks. Perhaps these five categories will help you organize your Thanksgiving in quiet praise for the goodness of God:
1. I am thankful for the United States of America;
2. I am thankful for Christ Church and its influence in my family’s life;
3. I am thankful for my wife of 36 years and my five remarkable children;
4. I am thankful for the gracious opportunities I have like a good education, a great job, and forgiving friends;
5. I am thankful for the mystery of life, those good experiences as well as those painful moments that fully express the reality of existing in a world like this.
I identify profoundly with the psalmist’s persuasive refrain, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1
