“Commitments”

Dear Friend,

I have been thinking about my commitments this week. I put them in three categories:

  1. Commitments I enjoy living up to: These are easy, and permit me to work in the realm of my passions.
  2. Commitments required of me: These are a necessary part of every life and every job. They are the things we simply must get done.
  3. Commitments I must reconsider: These creep into our lives, exhaust us, and make us question what we’re doing.

I have also been thinking about the nature of other people’s commitments to me. I wonder if I am the type of person that fits in the first category—or the third. My hope is to be the kind of person who sees every commitment as a 2-way opportunity for doing good in which I am blessed by the commitment of others and they are blessed by my commitment to them.

The commitment that I appreciate the most this week is found in Psalm 119, verse 88. The Psalmist said to God, “In your steadfast love give me life.” This is the recognition that God committed himself to love us, and that love affects the quality of our lives.
