“Countability”

Dear Friend,

The staff and I are reading John Maxwell’s book, Leadership Gold. The book includes a chapter entitled, “Don’t Send Your Ducks to Eagle School,” which resonated with me. It is a picturesque way of saying that different people have different strengths and weaknesses. Eagles are great at soaring—but are sorry swimmers. Ducks do great in the water—but should not perch high on top of a tree canopy.

The chapter also outlines ten qualities leaders possess. The last of these qualities is “countability,” which Maxwell defines as, “Can be counted on when it counts.”

Last Sunday we studied together the problem of pain. In Genesis, Chapter 3, Adam and Eve lacked what Maxwell calls “countability.” They could not count on each other when it really counted, and God could not count on them when it really counted.

I think it is very healthy for each of us to challenge ourselves in this character quality of “countability.” We often expect more of it from others than from ourselves. Answer these three questions as honestly as you are able:

1. Can your family count on you?
2. Can your co-workers count on you?
3. Can God count on you?

This quality is not only necessary; it is also noble and beautiful.
