An Uphill Walk

Dear Friend,

On Sunday, Dr. Calvin Miller delighted us with poetry that reminded me of my childhood discovery of Dr. Suess’ Cat in the Hat. Since Dr. Miller got me started, I want to share part of one of my favorite poems. This poem was written by Christina Rossetti and is entitled “Up-Hill.”

Does the road wind up-hill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day’s journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.

But is there for the night a resting-place?
A roof for when the slow, dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn.

I like Rossetti’s vision of life as an uphill walk. My faith especially appreciates the promise that a pleasant inn awaits us at the end of our walk. If you are walking uphill today, be encouraged that the Divine Innkeeper is preparing a place for you that will make every step of your journey worthwhile.
