Reflections on Prayer

Dear Friend,

The Week of Prayer always changes my schedule, but hopefully it accomplishes more than just what I do with my time. I believe that if I pray properly, my character is recalibrated. I am more inspired to turn away from evil and do good.

I am using Psalm 34, v. 4 and 5, during my prayer times. The Psalmist said, “I sought the Lord and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.” These verses encourage me. With God’s help I can make decisions and act free from fear that misdirects my thoughts. I see a second benefit in living with a confident and optimistic outlook that originates in shamelessness. So if the Week of Prayer recalibrates my soul, I will live more fearlessly and more optimistically.

I am also reading Dr. Calvin Miller’s book, The Path of Celtic Prayer, to enrich my prayer time. Dr. Miller will be preaching at Christ Church on October 12, 2008, and in my conversation with him I learned that it is his intention to share ideas from this book with us that Sunday. I encourage you to pray to the best of your ability and to come and learn from Dr. Miller “an ancient way to everyday joy” through prayer.
