"TheTwo Greatest Commands"
Dear Friend,
The human soul is both elementary and mystical. Some things about our psyche are easily understood; other things continue to baffle us throughout our lives. The virtue of love is a good example of this paradox of soul. Love is clearly mystical and mysterious, but it is also elementary and inescapable.
John, the apostle, after seventy years of thinking about who Christ is and what He taught; drew the following grand Christian conclusion:
“Whoever loves a brother or a sister lives in the Light.”
1 John 2:10
This statement does not require profound intelligence to understand, although the mystery of it often makes it difficult to live out. I wonder if it might assist all of us to ask ourselves three questions:
- In what ways do I show my love for God?
- In what ways do I show my love to those closest to me in life?
- In what ways have I attempted to love even my enemies?
If John’s most profound understanding on the teaching of Christ focuses on love, then we need to challenge ourselves to obey the two greatest commands that Jesus Christ spoke, which are to love God and to love those around us.
