"Our Best Future”

Dear Friend,

I once read that many people walk backwards into the future. This is a picturesque way of saying that if we continuously hold onto the past, we cannot move into our best future. Creating a future that provides meaning and calls out our best, does not require that we ignore or forget the past. In fact, for most of us, the experiences and understanding we have gained in the past will direct us to our best future.

How can we build on the best of our past experiences? Try answering these four questions:

  • What does my life experience teach me about my strengths and talents?
  • What does my life experience teach me about my weaknesses and inabilities?
  • If I fully use my strengths, what might I accomplish?
  • If I compensate for my weaknesses, what ineffective life patterns might I overcome?

God graciously empowers us to live life to its fullest. But something is broken in human nature that makes thoughtless existence seem acceptable. The Scriptures teach us:

“Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.”
 Psalm 111:2 ESV

When I study the great works of the Lord, I am inspired to attempt to live a life in which God works through the strengths and talents of thousands of people, working together, fully expressing their divinely given strengths. I know the future can be better than the past.
