“Life Values”

Dear Friend,

I am inspired by the lives of people who have transcended the burden of their culture and environment to achieve noble goals. On Sunday, I shared with you a snapshot from the life of Justice Thurgood Marshall. In an era when few black men escaped the ghettos of American cities, Marshall stands out for his remarkable and courageous achievements in college, law school and his legal career.

When I think about Thurgood Marshall, I am reminded of three of my own life values:

  • Always do what is right and reject cultural pressure to conform.
  • Grow into your full potential – the world needs your unique talents.
  • Your highest achievements require courage, character and Christian faith.

The American poet Longfellow wrote:

“Lives of great men all remind us,
we can make our lives sublime,
and, departing, leave behind us,
footprints on the sand of time.”
