"Your Best Self”
Dear Friend,
This past Sunday, I suggested that we each create a new daily habit, the habit of self-checking. Most people fall into the trap of attempting to control how the people around them think, feel and behave. Tragically, if we attempt to control others, we loose control of ourselves. Self-checking permits us to refocus throughout the day.
How do I control my thoughts, feelings and behaviors?
- We control our thinking by preparing better thoughts and replacing them when we recognize negative thought patterns.
- We control our feelings by taking responsibility for them and by networking with trusted friends who prompt us toward a more healthy emotional life.
- We control our behaviors by creating new rituals. Often, these new rituals require a friendship with someone who is strong where we are weak.
I believe the best way to influence the people around us is not by attempting to control them, but rather by giving to them our best self. This means to control our emotions; and share faith, hope and love. It also means to live in the kind of way that encourages and inspires those closest to us. Jesus taught, if we attempt to save ourselves, we lose, but if we give our best selves we win.
