"The Adventure of Affirmation”

Dear Friend,

The word “affirm” means to state something in a positive way. When we consider the value and importance of affirmation, we are not denying the harsh reality of life, that is, that things aren’t always positive. Affirmation is all the more necessary because life can be difficult.

Would you consider three ways to affirm both yourself and others?

  • Make positive statements about talents, strengths and abilities. It might sound like this: “I am a gifted problem solver.”  Or, “You are very talented at organizing your work.”
  • Make positive statements about relationship qualities. For example, “I am a friendly person.” Or, “You are a thoughtful person.”
  • Make positive statements about expectations, such as, “I expect to work hard and achieve my goals.” Or, “I expect you to keep your promise.”

Making positive statements about strengths, relationships and expectations enriches life. These affirmations are more empowering and influential than complaining about weaknesses, relational ineptitudes and disappointments.

Try experimenting with affirmation this week! If you have a good experience, share it with me in an e-mail. God bless you in the adventure of affirmation.
