"Relentless Learning ”

Dear Friend,

This past Sunday, with a heart of joy and thanksgiving, I celebrated with my family and friends 25 years of serving Christ Church. Many of my hopes, dreams and strategic plans are realities today. Perhaps the most significant lesson I learned by leading our church for a quarter-century is the power of persistence in the right direction. My experience is an example of one of Jack Welch’s big ideas in his book, Winning. Welch offers three steps for strategic living:

  • Define your big idea.
  • Recruit the right people.
  • Diligently learn the best practices.

With your permission I add a fourth step:

  • Pursue relentlessly and never give up.

When I looked around on Sunday, the Holy Spirit seemed to be reminding me that God works profoundly through the right ideas, the right people, the right practices and relentless persistence. You can achieve more than you ever imagined if these four steps define your long-term approach to life.

King Solomon was a very successful man who wrote: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). I believe he would not be offended if I expanded his idea and said: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your ability, with the right people, following the best models and refusing to surrender.
