"The Power of Humility ”
Dear Friend,
What do you believe about the ethical quality of humility? We must avoid answering this question with Christian clichés. When the philosopher, Nietzsche studied what the Bible says about humility, he concluded that Christianity was a “slave morality.” By that he meant:
- Humility is a virtue only if you are as powerless as a slave.
- Humility is a vice and pride is a virtue if you are a strong and competent individual.
Popular culture supports Nietzsche’s opinion from sports figures to Hollywood actors, and Washington politicians. We seem to honor the arrogant and under appreciate the humble. But, the Scriptures teach us very plainly that humility is a powerful force in our soul and in the world. Might you consider the three powers of humility?
- The Power of Speaking the Truth to Yourself: Self-deception weakens us but humble self-awareness strengthens us.
2. The Power of Employing your Strengths and Admitting Your Weaknesses: The humble soul exerts itself through its talents and gifts but never ignores or denies its weaknesses.
3. The Power of Grace: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Proverbs 3:34.
Perhaps today would be the right time to check out of the deceptiveness of pride and into the power of humility.
