"Guard Your Heart "

Dear Friend,

Life changes us. Some changes like the aging process are very predictable. Other changes like accidents and disease change us in unpredictable ways. Friedrich Nietzsche in Beyond Good and Evil warned: “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look long into an abyss the abyss also looks into you.”

I think he meant by this, that when we suffer by struggling for a good cause, we must guard our hearts so that the suffering does not make us people we do not want to be. By looking into the abyss, and the abyss looking into us, I think Nietzsche meant that when we suffer the mysteries of that which we do not understand in life, we must take care that this suffering does not leave us hollow and empty like the abyss.

The Scriptures teach:
“Watch over your heart with all diligence,
for from it flow the springs of life.”
Proverbs 4:23 ESV

In living life to its fullest, we will all experience some degree of suffering. But, if by the grace of God and the example of Jesus Christ we guard our hearts, suffering strengthens and ennobles the soul.
