Why Worship?
Dear Friend,
The natural response of our human nature to things that are beautiful, valuable or delightful is praise. We praise the things we like and criticize the things we don’t like. The Scriptures call the impulse to praise, worship. So, what have you worshiped this week?
In John Ortberg’s book: If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat, he wrote: “We are to worship God, not because His ego needs it, but because without worship, our experience and enjoyment of God are not complete. We worship God not so much because He needs it, but because we do. I need worship.” The human soul needs to worship. So, if I do not worship God, I end up worshiping people, things, and places which do not deserve worship. I believe that worship of God does two very beneficial things in my soul:
- Worship establishes my values and priorities. When I worship God I express that I value Him above everything else.
- Worship reconnects me with the wonder, strength, wisdom, power, glory, and grace of God. I do not worship the idea of God; I worship the person of God in the qualities of His character.
Take just a moment to think about three qualities of God’s personhood. Whisper a prayer of praise and appreciation to God for each of these qualities. Ask God to help you see these divine qualities at work in and through your life. You have worshiped; your soul lives in a higher state of freedom and well-being.
O give thanks to the Lord for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever.
