Think New Thoughts

Dear Friend,

Most of our behaviors originate in our thought lives. We see ourselves “in our mind’s eye,” doing certain activities and being a specific type of person. The Scripture affirms this when it says: “As a person thinks in their heart so are they.”

How do you think about yourself, and what activities do you engage in, in your mind?

Meditation is a spiritual discipline. Richard Foster recommends four skills to help us meditate in the kind of way that makes us better people:

First, think about the Scriptures through the personal stories in the Bible. Also think about “soul qualities” the Bible recommends, like love, patience, and commitment to do good.

Second, center. This mental process includes a hand motion. Start with your palms down, and think about the things in your life you want to release, like anger, resentment and pride. Then turn your palms up, and think about the graces you wish to receive, like faith, hope, and love.

Third, visualize the beauties and wonders of creation – a chirping bird, running horse, starry sky or ocean waves rolling up on the beach.

Fourth, think about current events: What is happening in the world? How are you being a force for good, and what might you do to participate with God in making the world around you better?

You can live a new life, but it begins by thinking new thoughts.
