New Year’s Goals

Dear Friend,

When I was a young man, I enjoyed listening to a rock song that observed: “Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’ … into the future.”

As a middle-aged man, the reality of that song confronts me. Every year I review my life purpose and write goals for the coming year. In the past, when I worked through this goal setting process, I believed if I did not accomplish my goals, I could always catch up in the future. But now, I am painfully aware that if I do not achieve my goals yearly, I will eventually be forced to leave things undone that I believe I should do.

What does the future look like to you? Do you see next year as a replica of last year? Or do you see next year as a wonderful opportunity, a gift from God? The scriptures say, “Teach us to number our days so we can present to you a heart of wisdom.” I think this means we need a spiritual awareness of how short life really is, so that we manage our time well, and develop wise souls prepared for eternal life.

May I encourage you to do three things to make 2007 better than 2006?

  • First, establish a daily “God time” in which you seek the Lord in prayer and Bible reading.
  • Second, reflect on what is most meaningful and valuable to you.
  • Third, write goals that place your values as the top priorities of your life.

“Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’ … into the future.” So we must grow, adapt and be prepared to live well and achieve our God-given purpose.

Happy New Year!
